Have Your Say – How to use the PPN

The last newsletter gave details of the PPN Reps on all the committees and partnerships in Leitrim. It is likely that the number of Reps will increase as more decision-making bodies seek the opinion of the community and voluntary sector. It’s up to you now to tell us what you want from living in Leitrim. Your Reps have the right to put ideas on the agenda and raise questions so use your voice and get in touch. The calendar below has details of meetings of Leitrim PPN and the committees where we have representation. It will change as the more information comes in and more events are added. Questions or  issues are normally raised at least week before  meetings but you can get in touch at any time at info@leitrimppn.ie and the details will be passed on to the reps that deal with that issue.

The Public Participation Network can be a really powerful tool for shaping policy in Leitrim and also at national level . So, USE YOUR VOICE and get in touch with us.

Joining the Environmental Pillar just got easier..

The Environmental Pillar of any PPN is slightly different to the other colleges. In order to be a member of this pillar, the Irish Environmental Network (IEN) approves the group’s membership. Many groups across the country wanted to be in the pillar but didn’t meet the criteria.

The IEN has listened to the concerns of PPN member groups. In response, Local Environmental Networks (LENs) will be set up and the criteria for entry have been revised. For more on this topic CLICK HERE.

National Report on PPNs 2016

Want to find out more about what PPNs actually do? 2016 was the first full year of the Public Participation Networks across the country. Last June all PPNs were asked to report on their activities to best see how things are working and what could be done better. Recommendations for the future include more funding and more flexibility in the structures to allow for differences in rural and urban areas. To find out more CLICK HERE…

UPCOMING EVENTS

Climate Change – People Change?

What?   International Seminar on Young People and Climate change

When?   Thurs. 16th Feb, 2018, 11:00 am – 1:00 pm

Where?  Ballinaglera Community Hall

Good Energies Alliance Ireland (GEAI) will host an international seminar as the final event of its “Climate Change – People Change?” project (CCPC)

The CCPC project started in 2016. The aim was to explore how climate change is affecting Ireland, Italy and Croatia and differences in the approaches to the challenges experienced.  It also built relationships among the partners and discussed methodologies in empowering young people to become climate champions.  The Youth Action week took place in Croatia and focused on increasing the self-confidence and power of expression of the participants in a physically challenging environment (the venue was an isolated disused army barracks and water was limited!)

Participants will describe their experiences, the kind of training used will be described and attendees will get a chance to meet all partners and participants.

Community Finances Roadshow Event
Money can be a thorny issue for many community groups, especially if you want to expand your facilities or run bigger projects. Leitrim PPN will be hosting an event in the coming months that deals specifically with community finances. We will invite organisations that fund social enterprises and community groups and have speakers to explore options for groups. Community Insurance will also be examined and we will have help with avoiding scams affecting your personal finances and best use of online financial products. Watch this space and get in touch if you have another topic you would like to see included.

FREE SMOKE ALARMS FOR VULNERABLE HOUSEHOLDS AVAILABLE FROM LEITRIM COUNTY COUNCIL

Following on from Leitrim Co Council’s successful Smoke Alarm Scheme last year, Free smoke alarms are again being offered to vulnerable households in 2018. Under the community smoke alarm scheme, two 10 year battery operated smoke alarms (one Optical and one Ionisation) are provided to vulnerable homes in Leitrim who do not currently have them.

Applications are invited from individual households (for example older people, people with disabilities, lone parents and unemployed persons) who currently have no smoke alarms and are in a position to install the alarms themselves. Voluntary groups/volunteers and others who visit people in vulnerable households, are asked to identify and assist people in applying for and installing the alarms.

For more details on how to apply, and for a link to the application form go to the Leitrim County Council web site:  CLICK HERE
