Winners all. Well done and thanks to all the groups that entered the Love Where You Live Leitrim Awards 2019. Leitrim Public Participation Network (PPN) is honored to co-sponsor this night in collaboration with Leitrim County Council (LCC).
On top of everything else that needs to be done – weeding, parties, outings, grant forms, meetings, etc. – you took the time to set down the achievements of your groups and nominated the Unsung Heroes of your communities.
Awards Night at Lough Allen Hotel, Drumshanbo
Almost 250 representatives from over 100 community groups throughout Leitrim gathered at a gala function in the Lough Allen Hotel, Drumshanbo, on Thursday night last for the Love Where You Live Leitrim Awards 2019. During this celebration of voluntary and community work 27 awards were presented across eight environmental and community categories.
Nominations were sought last March and judging days took place through May to September. Judges travelled to meet all the nominees in each of the three Municipal Districts-Ballinamore, Carrick-on-Shannon and Manorhamilton.
Visiting judges from our neighbouring PPNs in Cavan, Donegal and Longford were shown the Lovely Leitrim Hospitality and we danced, drank tea, ate cakes and generally had a great time with all the communities that welcomed us. Judging in the community awards was environmental awards was undertaken by renowned environmentalist and biologist Eanna Ni Lamhna who always has a rollercoaster journey through the towns and villages of the county.
Cathaoirleach of Leitrim County Council, Cllr Enda McGloin, Suzanne Duffy (LCC) and the Facilitator for Leitrim PPN, Michael McGovern, congratulated all the nominees on the innovation, determination and outstanding work shown by volunteers in their communities.
The capacity audience included young, old, Councillors and TD’s and demonstrates the healthy state of the community sector in Leitrim.
Cathoirleach Cllr Enda McGloin said: “These awards are a fitting recognition of the vast contribution made by community groups, businesses, schools and individuals to communities across our county, making them a better place to live, work and visit.”
During the ceremony, the various award categories, nominations and winners were announced by Eanna Ni Lamhna and Tommy Moran, well-known Leitrim GAA personality and former Leitrim Guardian Person of the Year, 2004.
Eanna Ni Lamhna delivered a presentation on biodiversity and pollinators during refreshments, while on what was World Mental Health Day, Hubert McHugh and Valerie Cogan, Community Psychiatric Nurse, Leitrim, outlined the important role communities, residents’ associations, schools and businesses all play in promoting positive mental health.
Awards were presented by the Cathoirleach, Cllr Enda McGloin and Leitrim PPN Secretariat members-

- Mary McKiernan (Social Inclusion)
- Philip Rooney (Manorhamilton MD)
All entrants in the Cleaner and Greener, Best Estate and Schools categories were presented with planting bulbs and gardening equipment as a small token of appreciation of their efforts.
At the end of what was a highly enjoyable evening, Tracy Ferguson, Resource Worker Leitrim PPN, thanked all those who entered and all the representatives for joining in applauding and recognising each other’s work.
The Love Where You Live Leitrim Awards will be seeking entries again in 2020.
