What’s New?

Leitrim PPN Members have been making the best of the good weather. Long may it last.  We’ve managed to get the dreaded GDPR out of the way since the last newsletter – if you’re still struggling and/or not totally fed up with it and want to find out more CLICK HERE.

The big news items today are the announcement of the Community Enhancement Programme – funding for community groups – and the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme. The application forms and guidelines not been released yet but if you want to do some homework take a look at our article on Being Funding Ready. Don’t forget to look at the other funding opportunities below: HSE Lottery Funds, Biodiversity Projects, and European visits under Town Twinning.

The main things we’ve been busy with are mapping the county’s defibrillators, progressing with solutions to waste water treatment for planning and getting your concerns about community insurance heard and addressed. Updates below.

We have representative feedback from two of the Strategic Policy Committees. The NW Regional Drug & Alcohol Task Force only met yesterday so we’ll have an update from that meeting in the next issue. Just when we’re having such a good spell of weather, the Department of Rural & Community Development is getting ready for the coming winter and want your input on this year’s information. PPN REPRESENTATION

PPN Representative Updates:

Strategic Policy Committee on Housing Social and Cultural Development:
Healthy Leitrim as a part of Healthy Ireland was discussed at length. Conversation focused on how the programme is being rolled out in Leitrim and what other initiatives could be introduced. The committee was also updated on the current budget for and status of delivery for Social Housing in Leitrim.

Strategic Policy Committee on Environment, Transport and Infrastructure:
Irish Water gave a presentation on their activities in Leitrim, including Capital Works
An update presentation was also given on Leitrim’s Rural Water Programme (including Group Water).  All the excellent work of Leitrim’s Tidy Towns and other community schemes was highlighted during an update on Litter in the county during which current incentives were reviewed.

Your PPN representative, Kealin Ireland asked for an update on the appointment of a Heritage Officer for Leitrim. The Director of Services advised her that the interviews were concluded and an offer of appointment had been made.
She also asked for an update on forestry and reminded the Executive that it has undertaken to review the County Development Plan to ensure that all forestry applications were in line with achieving sustainable development in all areas.

If you have any questions or comments for any of Leitrim’s PPN Representatives relating to their committees please get in touch.

UPDATES

Mapping Public Defibrillator locations

Arising from community concerns, we are working with Leitrim Volunteering Information Service to map and register all the public defibrillators in Co. Leitrim. So far we have locations for defibrillators in:
  • Newtowngore
  • Carrigallen
  • Kiltyclogher
  • Rossinver
  • Bornacoola

We know there are more out there. Just a note – the registering of the location and access codes for the defibrillators is just so the ambulance service can locate the nearest unit for people in an emergency. You don’t have to become first responders.
Please help us with this potentially life-saving work. For Registration Form CLICK HERE.

Waste Water Treatment and Planning in Leitrim

A major barrier to one-off housing in Leitrim is the cost of waste water treatment. Last March Leitrim PPN Plenary meeting of all groups gave the go ahead to explore the possibility of cheaper solutions through technological advances. The President of Sligo Institute of Technology was approached and we are currently liaising with Dr Brian McCann, Dept of Civil Engineering & Construction on this matter. He is collating some research into existing new technologies and research and we’ll keep you updated as and when we have more information.
