GRANTS FOR HOME IMPROVEMENTS

Climate change is high on the agenda for all agencies at the moment, and there are well advertised grant and incentives for home owners business owners and landlords to make their properties more energy efficient. You can get an overview of these energy saving grants on our website HERE.

However, as well as grants that help to improve the wider environment grants that help to improve the domestic and living environment of the vulnerable and less able tend to fall out of the spotlight. At the PPN we’ve addressed the issue here by giving you a quick guide to some of the domestic living grants available. This is by no means a comprehensive guide to all of the grants available, and you can find out more about the wider range of grants on offer at the Citizens Information website via the link at the end of this article.

Grants Available To Home Owners

There are grants available to home owners and occupiers that are less to do with energy efficiency and the environment, and more to do with the occupants domestic living environment and conditions.

Mobility Aids Grant Scheme

This scheme offers financial help towards the cost of upgrading your home in line with any mobility needs that you might have, such as access ramps, suitable bathrooms or stair lifts. Although the scheme can cover the full cost of works needed, the maximum available grant is €6,000.

Do I qualify?

In order to qualify for this scheme, you must:

  • Have a yearly income of less than €30,000.

How Do I Apply For The Mobility Aids Grant Scheme?

Housing Aid for Older People Scheme

The purpose of the Housing Aid For Older People Scheme is to facilitate older people with more complex needs to live at home by upgrading their properties. The maximum grant amount available is €8,000.

Do I qualify?

In order to qualify for this scheme, you must:

  • Be over 66 years of age (although exceptions may be made by local authorities).
  • Have a yearly income of less than €30,000 in order to qualify for the maximum grant rate of 95%.
  • Have a yearly income of between €30,001 and €35,000 in order to qualify for the next greatest grant rate of 85%.
  • Have a yearly income of between €35,001 and €40,000 in order to qualify for the next greatest grant rate of 75%.
  • Have a yearly income of between €40,001 and €50,000 in order to qualify for the next greatest grant rate of 50%.
  • Have a yearly income of between €50,001 and €60,000 in order to qualify for the lowest grant rate of 30%.

Lead Pipes and Fittings Replacement Scheme

This scheme was introduced in 2016 and applies to those in low-income housing whose water quality is affected by lead in their pipes. The maximum grant available is €4,000.

Do I Qualify?

In order to qualify for this scheme, you must:

  • Own your home and occupy it as your main residence.
  • Be replacing pipes that carry water used for human consumption.
  • Be able to provide evidence that lead contamination is a significant risk.
  • Have a yearly income of less than €50,000 in order to qualify for the maximum grant rate of 80%.
  • Have a yearly income of between €50,001 and €75,000 in order to qualify for the next greatest grant rate of 50%.
