A great crowd attended the Good Energies Alliance Ireland (GEAI) and IT Sligo conference last week. The event launched the Powerful Communities programme for the North West. Speakers from GEAI, IT Sligo, Western Development Commission, Tipperary Energy Agency, Sustainable Energies Authority of Ireland (SEAI) and North Leitrim Sustainable Energy Communities presented to the attentive and engaged audience.
Tony McLoughlin, T.D,. addressing the Powerful Communities Conference, Sligo
Tony McLoughlin T.D. opened the conference and spoke about the power of local campaigns to influence national policy, giving the example of the campaign against fracking.
“The speakers gave a fascinating overview of how local communities can get involved in the new world of solar, wind and biomass energy and the supports available,” said Aedín McLoughlin, GEAI CEO. “The conference discussions also provided an ideal platform for exchange of ideas and information amongst those who wished to create their own community energy schemes. Already such schemes are under way in the Midlands and there is no reason why Northwest communities cannot become energy self-sufficient and earn income from surplus generated renewable energy. The technology is now ready and the supports are there. The Powerful Communities campaign can make this happen!”
