Embracing Diversity – A Future Together

October 9, 2019 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

Mayo Social Inclusion Awareness
Embracing Diversity – A Future Together: this one-day seminar  will examine and chart what has been achieved in the area of Intercultural Integration in a small town and develop recommendations for mapping an integrated future for the town and towns of similar composition.
Contributors include academic experts and experienced practitioners and will feature strong local community participation.

Ballyhaunis Experience

Ireland has become increasingly diverse over the past 15 years – approximately 12% of Ireland’s population is non-Irish national. The small rural town of Ballyhaunis in Mayo stands apart from the national story. Residents of migrant origin from across 20 ethnic origins comprise 60% of the population of the town. The experience of interculturalism in Ballyhaunis has been largely positive. The arrival of young people and families has grown the population and has also led to new sports clubs being established.

Along with the positives, interculturalism has also brought challenges in terms of education, public services and community. This seminar is an opportunity to hear about the story of life in Ballyhaunis,  and to take learnings from its experience which can support other Irish towns in embracing the opportunities diversity brings.

When and Where

The seminar takes place at the end of National Social Inclusion Awareness Week (14-20 October 2019). In attendance will be community and voluntary organisations, immigration support agencies, LCDC members and chairs, local development and community development bodies, government departments, local authorities and others.

Speakers include Anastasia Crickley, Seán Óg Ó hAilpín, Dr Veronica Cassidy, Dr Tony Barrett, Dr Orla McGarry and moreis
